Chełmno and Świecie, the towns situated side by side and separated only by the queen of Polish rivers — the Vistula, over their nearly one thousand-year history have been carefully preserved their historical background and this effort is continued today.
A variety of nationalities through co-existence and integration over the years have become caught up in the rich history of both towns. It is out of this regard for the past of our towns and out of the care about future that the idea of the celebrations of the event, titled “Memory and Tolerance” originates.
“Memory and Tolerance” is to bring us closer to the tradition and the multi-national culture of this region. The primary objective of this event is to commemorate the Jewish community and also to promote tolerance and open-mindness. We want the ideas guiding this event to be specially addressed to the youth.
“Memory and Tolerance” is a number of events that will take place in both towns on 12-13 May, 2007.
The most important event of the celebrations will be unveiling of a commemorative plate and communal prayer at the site of the old Jewish cemetery in Chełmno. This will be followed by a concert of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Amos Talmon, Israel. The first half of the programme will comprise a few works on Jewish and Israeli themes, whereas the second half will be dedicated to Beethoven's VII symphony.
The american Jew HYIM and Justynę Steczkowską one of the most popular Polish starts, will perform their concerts by the old castle of Świecie. The music events will be accompanied by lectures on the history of Jews in Poland, Jewish heritage as a part of the Polish saga and the pat forward for a better future to be given by dignitaries such as Prof. W. Bartoszewski and Prof. Sz. Weiss. Other activities planned include cinematographic events and a famous exhibition of photographs of Polish Jews titled “I can still see their faces”. |
